The purpose of the Master of Science in Teaching Mathematics (MST) option for licensed secondary teachers is to strengthen the preparation of mathematics teachers in secondary schools. This program is designed to provide courses in mathematics education that enhance the qualification of experienced teachers.

For admission to this program, students should have the equivalent to a UIC undergraduate major in mathematics. The GRE is not required. Other applicants will be required to take appropriate courses to make up for any deficiencies in their mathematical preparation.

For the degree, candidates are required to earn 32 semester hours of adviser-approved graduate credit, with at least 12 semester hours of work completed at the 500 level. At the conclusion of the program, the following courses will be completed:

Required Courses

  • MTHT 411: Advanced Euclidean Geometry
  • MTHT 430: Math Analysis for Teachers I
  • MTHT 510: Introduction to Higher Geometry
  • MTHT 530: Mathematical Analysis for Teachers II
  • MTHT 435: Abstract Algebra

The above courses are mandatory in case they are not included in an undergraduate program. For more information on these courses have a look at the course descriptions section below. Substitutions may be possible with the approval of an advisor.

 

Elective Courses

Obtain at least 12 semester hours (usually 3 courses) of graduate credit in adviser-approved courses in mathematics. Topics should cover a variety of areas and 4 semester hours (usually 1 course) should be at the 500 level.

MTHT 411 Advanced Euclidean Geometry

Axioms for Euclidean geometry are developed based upon reflections. Further concepts in Euclidean geometry which arise from these axioms are explored. Course Information: 3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or better in MATH 215.

MTHT 430 Mathematical Analysis for Teachers I

Major topics include real number system with emphasis on the completeness axiom, limits of sequences and functions, derivatives, Riemmann integrals and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Course Information: 3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or better in MATH 210 and Grade of C or better in MATH 215.

MTHT 435 Abstract Algebra

Sets, properties of integers, groups, rings, fields. Focus on concepts applicable to high school teaching. Course Information: 3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. Prerequisite(s): MATH 210 and MATH 215.

MTHT 510 Introduction to Higher Geometry

Projective geometry, as an extension of Euclidean geometry, treated synthetically and/or algebraically. Desargues’ and Pappus’ theorems, subgeometries, conics and the underlying skew field. Course Information: For graduate students in mathematics teacher education programs. Other students enroll in MATH 440. Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or better in MATH 330.

MTHT 530 Mathematical Analysis for Teachers II

Derivatives, inverse functions, Riemann integral, trigonometric functions, logarithmic and exponential functions. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or better in MTHT 430 or consent of the instructor.
