Math Concentration

What is a math concentrator?

This is a special sequence of five mathematics courses designed for education students to complete College of Education requirements for the mathematics “Study in one Discipline.”

How do you become a math concentrator?

To become a math concentrator you must:

If a students meet all requirements, the Director of the Office of Mathematics Education will send an invitation to become a concentrator.

Required Courses

Required Methods Coursework

  • CI 404: Teaching and Learning Mathematics (3 credit hours)

Additional Math Content Coursework

In addition to the required methods coursework listed above, students must complete an additional 15 credit hours of math content coursework chosen from the following:

  • MATH 140: Arithmetic and Algebraic Structures (4 credit hours)
  • MATH 141: Algebraic and Geometric Structures (4 credit hours)
  • MTHT 450: Concepts and Methods in Elementary and Middle School Mathematics (3 undergraduate credit hours)
  • MTHT 465: Teaching Algebra for Understanding (4 credit hours)
  • MTHT 466: Introduction to Calculus and the Graphing Calculator (4 credit hours)
  • MTHT 467: Introduction to Number Theory with Application (4 credit hours)
  • MTHT 468: Geometry with Applications for Middle Grade Teachers (4 credit hours)
  • or Course equivalents in Mathematics as required by Illinois State Board of Education
