MSCS Department Awards

The MSCS departmental awards are determined each fall semester and the annual LAS reception for awardees occurs annually in the spring semester. Please visit the Scholarships page to submit an application.

Herbert Alexander Award

The Herbert Alexander Award was established by Susan Alexander in memory of her husband. Professor Herbert Alexander was a distinguished analyst who taught in the MSCS department from 1975 until his death in 1999.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science
  • Must be major in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science.
  • Must be in good academic standing with a minimum of 3.0/4.0 GPA.

UIC Robert A. Chalupnik Scholarship

Endowed fund established in memory of Robert A. Chalupnik (BS ’93, MBA ’88). Mr. Chalupnik was a Mathematics and Computer Science major who later became an investment banker. This scholarship will be awarded annually to support undergraduate and graduate students within the MSCS Department who are in good academic standing. Preference shall be given to students who are studying mathematics or computer science.

  • Students within the MSCS Department who are in good academic standing.
  • Preference shall be given to students who are studying mathematics or computer science.

Louise Hay Award

The Louise Hay Award is supported by a fund created by Professor Louise Hay, Head of the MSCS Department from 1980 until her death in 1989. The award has been given since 1984.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate or graduate students (sophomore standing or higher).
  • Must be a Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science major.
  • Must be in good academic standing with a minimum of 3.0/4.0 GPA.

Bernard Kurtin Scholarships

The Bernard Kurtin Scholarship is in honor of Bernard J. Kurtin, who was a physics major at St. Procopius College (now Benedictine University, Illinois). His belief in the importance of the sciences and math was demonstrated with a bequest he provided to establish the Kurtin Scholarship for Mathematics and Physics at UIC, starting in 2007.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science
  • Minimum of 60 semester hours completed (junior standing)
  • At least three upper level core courses beyond the Calculus sequence
  • Outstanding GPA in major courses (at least 3.5/4.0 GPA)
  • Excellent GPA in all undergraduate courses (at least 3.0/4.0 GPA)

Damber Singh Tomer and Meena Singh Tomer Endowed International Scholarship Fund

The Damber Singh Tomer and Meena Singh Tomer Endowed International Scholarship Fund, which was recently established in 2019 by Dr. Damber Singh Tomer and his wife Meena Singh Tomer, was created in order to recognize and appreciate the various opportunities provided to Dr. Damber Singh Tomer that allowed him to study at UIC. In order to alleviate the financial burden for current international students, Dr. Singh Tomer and his wife established this scholarship in 2019 for international students who study here at UIC.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate or graduate student in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science.
  • Must be majoring in one of the programs in the department.
  • Must be in good academic standing with a minimum of 3.0/4.0 GPA.
  • Preference is given to international students.

Victor Twersky Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was created by the Twersky family to honor Professor Victor Twersky, a distinguished applied mathematician in the MSCS department from 1966 to 1990.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science
  • Must be majoring in Applied Mathematics
  • Must be in good academic standing with a minimum of 3.0/4.0 GPA.

The Victor Twersky Memorial Scholarship is supported by a fund

Philip Wagreich Memorial Scholarship

This fund was created in the memory of former MSCS Professor and Director of the Office of Mathematics Education Philip Wagreich.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate or graduate student in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science.
  • Must be a Mathematics Education major.
  • Must be in good academic standing with a minimum of 3.0/4.0 GPA.

 

Nicholas A. Yassan Award

The Nicholas A. Yassan Award is supported by a fund created by Nicholas A. Yassan, an MSCS graduate, class of 2003.

Note: The recipient must be able to attend the LAS Recognition Dinner (in business attire), and will need to prepare thank you remarks for at the presentation of the award. The recipient will be able to bring one guest to the dinner.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science.
  • Minimum of 60 semester hours completed at UIC (junior standing).
  • Must be in good academic standing with a minimum 3.0/4.0 GPA.
  • Minimum of eight credit hours completed in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science.

Yeuk-Lam Yau-Leung Memorial Scholarship Fund

This fund was created by MSCS Professor Emeritus Stephen Yau in honor of his parents.

Eligibility

  • Student must have at least sophomore standing and be majoring in MSCS disciplines.
  • Must be in good academic standing with a minimum 3.0/4.0 GPA.
  • Preference is given to students in bio-mathematics.
